THOROUGHLY EMBARRASSED

Thoroughly Embarrassed
Read 2 Samuel 5:1–7:29
16As the Ark of the Lord entered the City of David, Michal, the daughter of Saul, looked down from her window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she was filled with contempt for him. . . . 20When David returned home to bless his own family, Michal . . . said in disgust, “How distinguished the king of Israel looked today, shamelessly exposing himself to the servant girls like any vulgar person might do!” 21David retorted to Michal, “I was dancing before the Lord, who chose me above your father and all his family! He appointed me as the leader of Israel, the people of the Lord, so I celebrate before the Lord22Yes, and I am willing to look even more foolish than this, even to be humiliated in my own eyes! But those servant girls you mentioned will indeed think I am distinguished!”2 Samuel 6:16, 20-22
Being embarrassed by someone you love ranks as one of life’s most inevitable experiences. No matter how carefully you guard against it, it’s bound to happen. Has it happened to you lately?
This is the story of David’s consolidation of power. He takes Jerusalem, defeats some of his enemies, and brings the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem (it had been captured by the Philistines). Now it’s time to celebrate, and David dances before the Lord. But Michal, David’s wife, is too embarrassed by David to enjoy the festivities. How could he do such a thing?
Look for important lessons in this passage on waiting for the fulfillment of God’s promises; how to fight; and why God sometimes says no to our requests.
Michal was so concerned about David’s undignified actions that she did not rejoice in the Ark’s return to the city (2 Samuel 6:16-20). Her contempt for David probably did not start with David’s grand entrance into the city. She may have resented David’s taking her from her former husband, Paltiel (see 2 Samuel 3:13-14). Whatever her reason, this contempt that Michal felt toward David escalated into a difficult confrontation.
Close friends and married couples know each other extremely well, including each other’s faults, weaknesses, and annoying habits. Minor irritations can lead to anger, and bitterness can lead to hatred. Unchecked feelings of resentment will destroy any relationship. Deal with your negative emotions before they escalate into open warfare.
Michal focused on appearances while David emphasized the condition of his heart before God. David was willing to look foolish in order to worship God fully and honestly. Don’t be afraid to express your feelings toward God, even when others are present.
