NEVER, NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP!
“As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right. But be sure to fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.”
1 Samuel 12:23 - 24
Samuel was not happy with the people. They insisted upon having a king when they had the Creator of the universe as their leader. Apparently, they had forgotten all that God had given to them and done for them. It would be understandable if Samuel were to just wash his hands of the whole affair and walk away from these ungrateful people. Perfectly understandable.
But note Samuel’s response. Instead of giving up on these people, he declared that he would not stop praying for them. And rather than leave the people to their own devices, Samuel said he would continue to teach them. God had given Samuel a call, a duty, a mission, and he was determined to remain faithful to that — regardless of the outcome.
When have you felt like quitting? When the person you’ve been praying for still shows no interest in God? When have you felt like walking away? When your small group seems more preoccupied with trivial matters than interested in issues of faith? When have you felt that it just doesn’t matter? When getting ready for Sunday mornings seems more drudgery than a joy?
Remember Samuel. Remember whom you are serving. God has called you, and God will take care of the results. He wants you to be faithful. Tell him how you feel, and renew your commitment to worship him through your service and obedience.
PRAYER
Lord, I’m glad I can come to you because I feel like giving up on …
